Functional Medicine: What It Is and How a First Visit and Labs Work

Quick answer

Functional medicine looks for the reasons behind your symptoms, not just a label for them. It starts with a long talk about your health and goals, then targeted blood tests. Next, you review the results together and build a plan around food, sleep, movement, stress, and treatment when needed. At Kee Health in Waunakee, near Madison, WI, labs are drawn in the clinic.

Maybe you feel tired, foggy, or "off," and your last checkup said everything looked fine. You are not alone. Here is how it works, step by step.

What functional medicine is

Functional medicine is a patient-centered approach that asks, "Why is this happening?" instead of only, "What medicine matches this diagnosis?" It looks at how your body systems connect, such as hormones, metabolism, gut health, inflammation, sleep, and stress.

The tools are familiar: a detailed history, standard lab tests, and changes to daily habits, with treatment when it fits. The difference is time, follow-up, and a plan built around you.

  • Not a replacement for your doctor. Keep your primary care provider and regular screenings.
  • Not one-size-fits-all. Two people with the same symptom may get very different plans.
  • Not a quick fix. Changes usually build over weeks to months. Results vary.

Who functional medicine may help

It tends to fit adults with ongoing concerns that have no one simple answer, such as:

  • Low energy, brain fog, or poor sleep. When you are worn out and not sure why.
  • Weight and blood sugar goals. A medical plan with labs and follow-up. See GLP-1 weight loss.
  • Perimenopause and menopause. Hot flashes, sleep, mood, and weight changes. See women's health.
  • Low drive, strength, or stamina in men. Care that starts with labs. See men's hormone health.

From first visit to lab review, step by step

Step 1

The consult

  1. We go over your symptoms, history, medications, and supplements.
  2. We talk about food, sleep, stress, movement, and what you have already tried.
Step 2

Targeted labs

  1. We order the tests your story points to, not every test there is.
  2. Blood is drawn here at Kee Health. Labs are typically needed before any treatment starts.
Step 3

Lab review and plan

  1. We walk through your results in plain words, next to your symptoms.
  2. Your plan may include nutrition, lifestyle coaching, supplements, and GLP-1, hormones, or peptides when appropriate.
Step 4

Follow-up

  1. Regular check-ins on how you feel.
  2. Repeat labs when needed, and changes to the plan as you go.

Bring a list of your medications and supplements, any recent lab results, and your top two or three goals.

What your labs can show

Labs give us a starting point we can measure and recheck. Common wellness tests include:

  • CBC. A complete blood count, which checks red cells, white cells, and platelets.
  • CMP. A metabolic panel for blood sugar, electrolytes, kidney, and liver markers.
  • Lipid panel. Cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • Hemoglobin A1c. Your average blood sugar over about the past three months.
  • Thyroid panel. TSH and related thyroid tests when they fit your symptoms.

Other tests may be added based on your history. If your order includes a lipid panel or a fasting metabolic panel, do not eat for 8 to 12 hours before the draw. Water is fine. We confirm instructions when you book. See our labs and blood draws page for more.

A lab number is one piece of the story. We read results next to how you feel, then recheck to see what is changing.

When to get checked right away

Functional medicine is not urgent care. Call 911 or go to the ER for:
  • Chest pain, pressure, or trouble breathing
  • Sudden weakness, numbness, face drooping, or trouble speaking
  • Fainting, or severe belly pain
  • Vomiting blood, or black or bloody stools

See your primary care provider soon for unexplained weight loss, a fever that will not go away, or a new lump. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988.

Frequently asked questions

Is functional medicine legit?

It uses standard tools like history, exams, blood tests, and lifestyle changes. Research is encouraging: a 2019 Cleveland Clinic study in JAMA Network Open found patients in a functional medicine program reported bigger improvements in physical health at six months than patients in usual primary care. Results vary from person to person.

Do I need to fast before functional medicine labs?

Only for some tests. A lipid panel or fasting metabolic panel needs 8 to 12 hours without food. Water is fine. CBC, A1c, and most thyroid tests usually do not need fasting. We confirm when you book.

What is the difference between functional and integrative medicine?

They overlap. Functional medicine focuses on finding root causes across body systems. Integrative medicine blends standard care with other therapies. At Kee Health, both happen under one roof.

Is functional medicine covered by insurance?

It depends on your plan. Kee Health is out of network for major insurance and accepts credit cards, HSA, and FSA. Ask about lab costs when you schedule.
