Blood pressure check during a DOT physical at Kee Health

Did you know?

  • In compliance with DOT requirements, a DOT physical examination must be administered by a licensed medical examiner.
  • A DOT physical exam can be valid for up to 24 months, which depends on your health. Your particular medical examiner may need to issue a certificate for less than 2 years due to a medical condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes that may require continued screening in a shorter period of time.
  • Once you are found fit to drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), your medical examiner will provide a copy of your DOT physical exam results showing you passed the examination as well as a certificate.

Preparing for your visit

Before your visit

Prepare the following information in advance of your scheduled visit:

Medical records
  • Put together a list of any medical conditions you’ve been diagnosed with
  • Prepare a list of your current medications and the name of the prescribing doctor
  • Take note of any medical devices that you require
  • If you have a heart condition — collect the record of your most recent EKG, stress test or echocardiogram
  • If you have sleep apnea — collect the record of the last 90 days of your CPAP usage
  • If you are diabetic — bring the record of your last HbA1c blood test (within last 6 months)

On the day of your visit

Here’s a checklist of things you should bring:

Identification
  • Photo identification (CDL, state issued ID, valid driver’s licence, or passport)
Medical records
  • List of medications, including strength and dosage, for both prescription and over-the-counter drugs
  • 90 days of CPAP usage records (if applicable)
  • Last HbA1c test result (if applicable)
Payment
  • Exams are $95
  • We accept cash, all major credit cards, and company checks
Other
  • Eye glasses (if applicable)
  • Hearing aids (if applicable)

Hydrate! Drink a glass of water and come in with a full bladder — you will have to provide a urine sample.

During your visit

  • Complete paperwork and/or provide staff with employer provided information
  • Provide staff with valid photo identification
  • Prepare to spend about 30 minutes at Kee Health for the exam
  • Provide a urine sample

What to expect during your visit

Step one

Medical history

To provide an idea of your general health and family background, you’ll be asked to fill out a brief one-page medical history detailing past illnesses, diseases that run in your family, and your overall health.

Step two

The exam

Once you’ve provided your medical history our team will review the information you’ve provided, go over any medical conditions you may have, and perform a basic urinalysis test. As part of the exam, he’ll also:

  • Measure your height and weight
  • Take your blood pressure and pulse
  • Test your range of motion
  • Examine your eyes and ears
  • Check your breathing

Step three

Paperwork

The final step in the process is the paperwork. Once your medical history and exam are complete, the office will fill out all the necessary paperwork to process the exam results. When you leave the office, you’ll get a copy of the exam to take with you when you get your CDL, and a second copy to give to your company. We’ll also keep a scanned copy of the exam in your file at the office. And after all the paperwork has been processed, you’ll get your very own DOT medical card to keep with you at all times when you’re driving.

Note: If you need a copy of the DOT exam faxed to your company, please have the fax number handy.

Physical exams by nationally-registered examiners

Nationally-registered examiners certified to perform DOT physical exams that keep commercial drivers safe, healthy, and on the road.

To comply with the Department of Transportation’s federal regulations, organizations must employ commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers who have passed a physical exam conducted by a qualified examiner. As of May 21, 2014, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires that all FMCSA physical exams be conducted by a nationally-registered certified medical examiner.

Kee Health is a nationally-registered provider of physicals for CMV drivers. We understand all the current requirements for DOT physicals, and we can ensure that your drivers are qualified physically and mentally to do their jobs. In order to be listed as a nationally-registered medical examiner (ME) who can legally provide a DOT-compliant physical exam, MEs must pursue the appropriate training and pass a certification test. Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs), Doctors of Medicine (MDs), and Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs) can all qualify. When an ME is nationally-registered, it indicates that the physical exams they conduct adhere to and are consistent with the high standards of health and safety set forth by federal agencies. As part of our comprehensive DOT services, Kee Health can provide a nationally-registered provider to administer any physical exam your organization needs to remain DOT-compliant.
